Hayle Towans

Towans journeys across the back waters and side areas, and it gives us glimpses of places and people ignored by the new tourism of art and culture. Much of this habitat is not featured in the tourist vision, and yet it is deeply connected to the sense of place. Discordant items are made whole by the Towans mysterious ways: a rabbit part eaten by a jack russell, beer cans, an abandoned hoody. This is the poetry of the Towans.

Gwithian (Hayle)

As I approached the car I could see smoke seeping from the window. Then I noticed a black pipe running from the exhaust. Pulling open one door, I tried to wake the occupant. I felt sick to the pit of my stomach.

Two weeks later the Coroner called me to inform me that I would be needed for an interview as the young man had just been released from hospital. He had bought an old car, driven to Gwithian car park, and successfully killed himself in the same manner that I had previously interrupted two weeks before.
